Incorporating the latest green building technology

Discovery 5 House is our second entirely net-zero house in Calgary and fifth demonstration house. We have continued to develop in partnership with SAIT Polytechnic, to take eco-smart home building to a new level of green.

The house relies entirely on its own extensive solar and other renewable power systems to produce as much or more energy as needed annually. Discovery 5 House is rated/certified under the following programs - Holmes Approved Homes, LEED for New Homes and EnerGuide. The Discovery 5 House has been awarded the Roxul Elite Builder Award - 2012.

Discovery 5 features advanced grey water recycling and rain water collection to reduce reliance on the municipal water system. For example, a green roof that filters rainwater for use in toilets, cold water laundry and irrigation can be found just off the master bedroom.

A solar chimney is used to heat water, while a solar photovoltaic system on the roof and garage utilizes the sun’s power for electricity and heating throughout the home.

The kitchen contains a “living wall” filled with many plants and herbs to improve indoor air quality and reduce cooling requirements. Wood containing blue vegetable-based coating to prevent mildew and mould, along with wall tight eco foam insulation – dyed purple for easy recognition – can be found beneath the fixtures throughout the home.
